Several months ago, I received a call from a 5th year college student.
In an attempt to make his university’s Division 1 team, he had been working tirelessly for more than four years (impressive dedication in and of itself).
He was preparing for the beep test, or Yo-Yo as some call it, and he was looking to gain an edge.
We spent an hour on the phone. I shared my insights as someone with an abundance of beep test experience. Then walked him threw some practices that might help him better prepare.
Fast forward to yesterday, and I received this update from him, post beep test:
“Wells, your call was so helpful in the process, especially leading into the YoYo where I was looking for any edge I could find. I definitely used your visualization technique frequently leading into it. It was interesting, I would try to visualize the entire morning from getting up, to what I was wearing, to what I was doing on the drive over, etc. When I did a practice run, and everything in the morning was panning out just as I had visualized the night before, it felt like I was gaining confidence after each moment. This confidence came from seeing everything that I saw in my head come to fruition before me.
All of this made me believe that because I put on the clothes the way that I visualized, and because I prepared my breakfast just as I had visualized, I was bound to complete the Yo-Yo the way I had visualized. And while I did fall short of my Yo-Yo goal, I did improve, and I also truly believe that the visualization helped me feel confident before and after the test…
And the best news is that I got a two-week trial that has now been extended through the Spring!”
How cool is that?
I was so impressed with this young man’s humility and ability to reach out and ask for help.
But he didn’t stop there. He took the next and most important step – he took action!
I’ll leave you with this nugget on the ability to act:
“You see, in life, lots of people know what to do, but few actually do what they know. Knowing is not enough! You must take action.”
Is there anything that we can help you with?
If there is, strengthen your courage muscle by giving us a shout!
