Triumphing Over Trials: Being Tougher Than Your Tough Times

As a professional soccer player, I know firsthand that things don’t always go according to plan.

Our season with Charlotte FC hasn’t started off well in terms of results. We’ve played eight games and only managed to win one, draw three, and lose four. Although we faced some strong opponents, it’s not an excuse. It’s disappointing because we had a fantastic preseason, talented players, a great coaching staff, and passionate supporters. We all expected to begin the season with a much better record, but unfortunately, it hasn’t gone as planned.

With high expectations come feelings of let down, negative opinions, and criticism. As an athlete, it can be challenging to deal with this, especially when some fail to see the long-term vision. Nonetheless, as an athlete, you understand that it comes with the territory. However, I want to use these “tough” times to encourage and inspire others who are or will face similar situations.

In sports, business, and life, we all encounter challenging times. You know exactly what I mean, don’t you? Those moments when everything seems to be against us. Whether it’s on the field or in the workplace, it feels like we can’t seem to catch a break.

Here are my thoughts on how to handle these tough times:

First and foremost, remember that tough times don’t last.
It may feel like you’re stuck in a rut, but it’s temporary. Keep pushing and persevering, and you’ll come out stronger on the other side.

Secondly, these tough times are happening FOR you, not TO you.
They’re an opportunity to learn and grow, to test your resolve and see how badly you want something. Don’t view them as an obstacle, but rather an opportunity to rise to the challenge. It’ll really help shift your perspective to push through the pain!

Lastly, ignore the “noise.”
People may criticize, judge, or put you down, but that’s okay. Everyone’s entitled to their own opinion and when you’re on the big stage this will happen more and more. Stay focused on what you set out to achieve and listen to that inner voice that tells you to keep going. Control what you can control and give it your all. Eventually you will reap the rewards!

I’ll leave you with a quote that I like to tell myself that helps me get through tough times.

“Tough times don’t last, Tough people do.” – Robert Schuller

Everyone who has ever achieved anything has faced tough times in their life. And they kept going!  I mean, think about the alternative.  Are you just going to quit or give up because you hit a bump in the road?  Of course not!

Believe in yourself and continue to pursue what you set out to achieve.

You won’t regret it.

I believe in you.

Keep Grinding!
