I’m Michelle Betos, currently in my 13th year as a professional goalkeeper.
Hailing from Queens, New York, my path to becoming a professional athlete was anything but straightforward. I played a lot of sports growing up, and it wasn’t until right before college that I truly started to specialize and focus fully on soccer.
The Drive to Excel:
When I started out, my main objective was to achieve specific goals and milestones. However, as time went on, I came to understand the immense value of investing in the mental side of the game. As a highly driven athlete, I wanted to leave the sport knowing that I had become the best version of myself, having fully exhausted my potential. This pushed me to discover and embrace the significance of mental performance.
Investing in Mental Performance:
While I had a successful college career, I departed with a sense of regret, feeling as though I hadn’t given my all. Thus, when the opportunity to play professionally presented itself, I resolved to leave no stone unturned. Climbing the ladder of success, I invested heavily in enhancing my mental performance. I believe that at the highest level of competition, where talent abounds, it is the strength of the mind that sets individuals apart. By maximizing my mental resilience, I managed to make a name for myself in this highly competitive arena.
The Power of the Mind:
In pro soccer, sometimes the difference between players is really small. It can come down to just a few inches or centimeters. While talent is definitely important, I truly believe that it’s the power of the mind that’s helped me achieve my goals. Taking care of my mental game not only made me a better player, but it also made me happier and healthier overall. That’s why I’m so passionate about sharing these tools and ideas with younger athletes, coaches, and parents.
Empowering the Next Generation:
Kids today spend a lot of time practicing their physical skills on the field. But it’s just as important to work on their mental game. Being resilient and having a strong mind can help them reach their goals not just in soccer, but in everything they do. That’s why I’m committed to helping younger generations maximize their performance and achieve success, happiness, and good health. I want them to know that they have the power to be their best selves both on and off the field.
I’m humbled by the road I’ve traveled and the lessons I’ve learned. The significance of mental performance cannot be overstated. It has allowed me to become the woman and athlete I am today. I urge and encourage all aspiring athletes, coaches, and parents to recognize the power of the mind and invest in mental resilience. Because this is ultimately what will help you uncover your true potential, both on and off the field.
