Soccer Resilience® Welcomes Ian Harkes: Elevating Mental Fitness in the Soccer Community
We are thrilled to announce a significant addition to the Soccer Resilience® team – New England Revolution midfielder Ian Harkes is joining us as an ambassador. With a wealth of experience that spans continents and leagues, Ian brings unparalleled insights into mental resilience, a trait that is central to thriving in the beautiful game.
At 28 years old, he is returning to MLS after an impressive run in the top tiers of Scottish football. His tenure with Dundee United, spanning over four seasons, showcased his exceptional talent and dedication. With an impressive 165 appearances for the historic club, Harkes played a pivotal role in securing victories and achievements for his team.
"I'm thrilled to work with Soccer Resilience! When I discovered their platform for players, parents, and coaches, it just clicked. Mental strength is everything, and daily training is priceless. We often overlook the importance of consistent mental training. While my career has been blessed, I've also faced challenges, and how you respond matters. I’m excited to share my experiences with the community!"
During his time with Dundee United, Harkes' contributions were highlighted by his role in the club's victory in the Scottish Championship, earning promotion back to the first division. In the Scottish Premiership, his stats spoke volumes – five goals and eight assists across 84 appearances in the first division. Notably, the 2021-22 season marked a standout moment for Harkes, setting career highs in appearances (37) and goals (4), leading him to be honored as the Tangerines’ Player of the Year.
"Ian has a huge amount of experience in the game where he has had to build mental resilience, from his time in Scotland to moving back to MLS," states Bryan Byrne, COO of Soccer Resilience®. "His insights will be an invaluable asset, particularly in guiding college players and offering advice to those aspiring to make their mark on the international stage."
Ian's journey in soccer is enriched by his familial ties, as the son of former U.S. Men’s National Team and New England midfielder John Harkes. Remarkably, he becomes half of the first father-son duo to represent the Revolution in club history. His story began as a Homegrown Player with D.C. United in 2017, where he quickly asserted his presence on the field. He notched 37 appearances, four goals, and two assists during his two-year tenure in D.C.
A talent nurtured on both sides of the Atlantic, Ian's roots trace back to Derby, England, and his development flourished through D.C United’s academy. His college journey at Wake Forest University was equally illustrious, playing 82 games for the Demon Deacons. His collegiate career culminated in the prestigious Mac Hermann Trophy in 2016, a testament to his standing as the nation's best men’s college soccer player.
At Soccer Resilience®, we recognize that excellence on the field is underpinned by mental strength. Ian Harkes embodies this ethos, making him an invaluable addition to our ambassador lineup. Join us in celebrating his journey and expertise, as we continue to empower the soccer community through the power of the mind.
